End of module evaluation

Starting at the beginning.. I found it extremely hard to write my own briefs. I tried writing them similar to how the briefs we've been previously given were; quite broad and with little focus. It was brought to my attention during the first crit back after summer that I had to be more specific with what it was the brief was asking. I still found it challenging, but I got there in the end and got them all written up and to at least a satisfactory standard.

I think I underestimated just how much should have been done, or at least what could have been achieved. I definitely lagged at the beginning, and focused a lot primarily on one brief, and another closely followed. I neglected everything else, thinking I'd have more than enough time to get them done and finished to a high standard. I was so wrong! It crops up in every evaluation, and no matter how much I say I'll work on it, my time management seriously needs working on. I wish I'd set myself certain amounts of time to complete my briefs, so I could fit at the very least 2 more in.

Nearing the end of the module, I found myself with 2 and a half weeks left and with 3 briefs outstanding; one of which I did not enjoy doing as much as I thought I would, and didn't properly resolve.
I'm happy with the work I produced for the competition brief: Aviva Live, and the identity for Andrew Lythe Photography. As I had left it so late to do the competition brief, I was unable to physically produce some of the work, and had to rely on 2D proposals on my presentation boards. I'm aware the briefs won't be submitted until February/March, so I intend to get what I wanted to do done which I'm really excited about.

Though a few of my briefs enabled me to experiment with type, I didn't really find myself doing so much. I love making type out of objects, but what I'd really like to do is to use large pieces of text within resolutions. I will ensure I give my next briefs more thought.

I did enjoy this module. It was certainly an experience to be able to do what I wanted to do, even though I'd change at least one of my briefs.

I'm looking forward to writing more briefs for myself in the future.

Final crit feedback

The final crit went kinda well. People's main concern was my presentation boards. I've actually printed most of them already (printed before the crit) so I'm not re-doing them which is a bit annoying. I'm definitely going to take on board what was said, and use the feedback to ensure my future presentation boards are well-done.

-Re print museum letterhead
-Re print museum posters
-Photograph aviva poster > put on board
-Photograph aviva leaflet > put on board
-Photograph museum posters > put on board
-Board 1 book covers re do
-Amazon shot on computer
-Photograph type poster > put on board
-Card packaging
-Photograph typefaces (detail shots)
-Some presentation boards portrait?

I just spent an obscene amount of money printing A2 boards. THANK GOD for the £15 vouchers. I felt rich but stressed this morning. I now feel poor but calm(er). I suppose that's a good thing?

Leaflet

I've also put the design on a canvas tote bag which would hold everything (badge, smaller version of the poster, leaflet, t-shirt)

Badges?

As well as applying the design to t-shirts, I've put them on badges which would be a part of a 'welcome pack' when the children go to the open day. Again, there's a variety; type, image, and both type and image.

Action plan

Final poster

I'm really happy with how the poster looks.

And some more..

More poster layouts

Poster revisited

The poster needed more information as to what it's actually about, so I've been editing...

I know it's hard to see what some of it says, so I'll tell you here: WE LCOME YOU, Help children around the country get back into education, OPEN DAY (contact info at the bottom)

T-shirts

I'm really happy with how the poster is looking. It's eye-catching, interesting, clever and simple. It does need a little more work, but generally I think it's looking good.

Since there will be an open day for children to find out more information about how they can get back into education, I've been thinking about other forms the designs could take. I've applied the design to t-shirts which would be worn by the helpers at the open day.

I thought it'd be nice to have a mixture, so I've split the designs up into image, type and both image and type.

Presentation boards..

I've managed to get 3 load of presentation boards done!

The Museum of Garden History brief:

The Chronicles of Narnia brief:

Andrew Lythe Photography:

There's still a few minor details I've yet to add on the first two, but they won't take long and they'll be done soon!

Oh dear..

The good news is.. I've managed to do a few 'to do's'! I'm certainly getting there. The only problem I can see is getting everything printed in time. I emailed James this morning to see about booking a print slot, but he's completely full up until Wednesday! :O I'll have to get up major early every day and sneak in a drop in slot. It's doable. I'll sort it.

Moooooar

Had another little alteration play with the poster. I didn't feel as though the 'WE LCOME YOU' worked when running down the side. I think it made it a bit too awkward to read for such an informative poster.

I've decided the larger text will appear either above or below the image.

I've introduced some more colours. It definitely needs colour, to emphasise the important areas.

Perhaps the image would look better and as though it belonged a little more if it was filled with colour? I've given it a go anyway..

They look 100% better! I'm think I'm definitely going to go ahead with this idea.

The green one looks a lot more earthy. I think people would recognise the link between identity and country a lot easier if I were to use this colour.
The blue I've used is nice, but I don't think it does it any more justice. Blue's a very cold colour. I want the poster to look warm, interesting and inviting. I think the pink is nice, but it looses the link to land. Ooooh, I don't know haha!

I've come to the conclusion that the poster should be portrait, so I've altered it, and put the finger print on too.
It looks so much better already.

I've been using dummy text the for time being, and when I get round to using the proper words there won't be as near as much.

I prefer the first example. It doesn't stand out as much as the second, but it looks better visually. It reminds me of the UK. It's very worldly, and that's what the brief emphasised; children AROUND the world.
Perhaps this could be a campaign for the UK, amongst other countries which have the same design style and idea. Perhaps a variety of finger prints could be made up to fit various other countries.

Prints on poster

Thought I'd have a quick look and see what the prints would look like on the poster.

I prefer this a lot more than what it was before (though I would've used a different photograph!)
It's a lot more simple and powerful.
