Walking stick

Here's another object I've been playing around with; a walking stick.
I've chosen to focus on the 'sole' part of the shoe for this poster. The emphasis is on the grip and how it won't slow you down... as older people are known for being dawdlers.

As demonstrated below, I've been playing around with the depth of field. These have been done using photoshop, just so I could see what they'd look like. I've yet to play with the depth of field using a digital SLR. The images will be of a lot better quality and the depth of field will be a lot more accurate and natural.
I want the black grip to be the only in-focus object in the image. The actual stick will be a little blurred, and the rest possibly completely blurred apart from the major parts around the stick. The second image, I think, works better, because of the blurred look. Originally I wanted a completely clear background, but a little texture gives it a better feel. It makes it look more real.

As well as the effects, the photography needs to be spot on. I want a close up shot of what the poster's about, however, it needs to be clear enough for people to know it's a photo of a walking stick. It's obvious to me, obviously, but to others it may not be. Perhaps I could just ask some people, see what they think. It'd be good to get some outside feedback.
